Doctrine of Holy Spirit

Pneumatology- Doctrine of Holy Spirit

Jesus said "Ye must be born again". In John 3:3 Jesus states "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

In Christian systematic theology, "pneumatology" refers to the study of the biblical doctrine of the Holy Spirit. Generally this includes such topics as the personality of the Spirit, the deity of the Spirit, and the work of the Spirit throughout Scripture. Jesus said he would send "another" in his place (John 14:16). The word for another is allos in Greek and refers to another just like Jesus. It is reasonable to conclude from this that the Spirit is a person since Jesus is clearly a person. The Holy Spirit is distinguished from, yet closely related to, the Father and the Son - and that on an equal basis make up the third part of the Trinity.

The sending of the Holy Spirit might be considered the greatest event in all of history next to the incarnation, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This even of the coming of the Holy Spirit inaugurated the church at Pentecost. At that time the Holy Spirit took the place of Christ's physical bodily presence with His disciples (the people of God). Just as God had done with the nation of Isreal, He then did with the church. The arrival of the Holy Spirit completed the third part of the Tri-part formula "I will be their God and they will be my people and I will dwell with them".

The Holy Spirit performs specific divine functions in the life of the Christian or the church. These include:

1. Conviction of sin. The Holy Spirit acts to convince the unredeemed person both of the sinfulness of their actions, and of their moral standing as sinners before God.

2. Bringing to conversion. The action of the Holy Spirit is seen as an essential part of the bringing of the person to the Christian faith. The new believer is "born again of the Spirit".

3. Enabling the Christian life. The Holy Spirit is believed to dwell in the individual believers and enable them to live a righteous and faithful life. As a comforter or Paraclete, one who intercedes, or supports or acts as an advocate, particularly in times of trial.

4. Inspiration and interpretation of scripture. The Holy Spirit both inspires the writing of the scriptures and interprets them to the Christian and/or church.

Not only does the Holy Spirit work with the church, He also confronts the whole world (every human).

John 16:7-8 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. (8) And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

I have listed a few web links below that explain the person and role of the Holy Spirit. In mainstream Christian beliefs the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. As part of the Godhead, the Holy Spirit is equal with God the Father and with God the Son.
