Discipleship Certificate

Bible Study CertificatesMany of you have heard the expression, “you must be one to know one.” This could be the theme of discipleship. We must be a disciple of Christ to disciple another.

Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given complete authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (nlt MT 28:18-20)

He has commanded us to go and make disciples. Teach them to obey all the commands He has given us. “What is a disciple?” “What is discipleship?”.True discipleship means that we first implement Christ’s teaching in our lives in such a way that that people see Christ in us and give Him the glory. We must not be content with only the receiving and passing on of knowledge, but we are to live out the life before those we instruct, just as Christ did.

There is a great difference between a student and a disciple. In fact, discipleship is a lifestyle. We are Christ’s disciples and this Christian life calls us to learn and live like Him. This will require significant changes in the way we think and live.

Romans six lays a foundation for a disciple, when it states “Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more kindness and forgiveness? Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it? Or have you forgotten that when we became Christians and were baptized to become one with Christ Jesus, we died with him? For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives. Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised as he was. Our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin. And since we died with Christ, we know we will also share his new life.” Romans 6:1-8)

The King James version says we are to walk in newness of life. In another place the Bible states that a disciple of Christ (believer) is a new creation and that we are to put off the old man and put on the new man. This implies that we are responsible to yield to the Spirit (die to self) as He renews us.

Romans goes on to say “So you should consider yourselves dead to sin and able to live for the glory of God through Christ Jesus. Do not let sin control the way you live;* do not give in to its lustful desires. Do not let any part of your body become a tool of wickedness, to be used for sinning. Instead, give yourselves completely to God since you have been given new life. And use your whole body as a tool to do what is right for the glory of God”. (nlt) Rom 6:11-13)

Discipleship requires that we must regularly meet with God. In the book of Acts we find the account of what a true disciple looks like. “The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men who had had no special training.”

They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus.” (Acts 4:13) James says “remember, it (God’s message) is a message to obey, not just to listen to. If you don’t obey, you are only fooling yourself.” Jesus said “Anyone who listens to my teaching and obeys me is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse, because it is built on rock. But anyone who hears my teaching and ignores it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will fall with a mighty crash.” (Mt 7:24-27)

Jesus attached a high cost to discipleship. Disciples must be motivated to pay the price. The requirement of discipleship is that we must spend time with Jesus!
